Please be positive, as even despite a burst ulcer, a bout of pneumonia (probably from aspiration because of the fact that proper preparation would have been impossible with a burst ulcer), and two attacks of acute ischaemia from the (high) pressure he has had, your uncle is still there waiting to come out of the problems he has had. It would be totally inappropriate to compare an intensive care with a morgue or a mortuary, where you think no one comes out. He or she is taken to an intensive care unit just to do the best for a patient so that he or she walks out of it after having recovered. Please do not despair and lose hope. Cheer up. After all your uncle has gone through and is still there in the intensive care, it means that the things are being taken care in the best possible manner. It is a difficult time for you and your family and kindly accept my best wishes. Cheer up and keep your fingers crossed.

If they have stopped sedating your uncle then they must feel his lung function is better. If he had an ulcer that burst, it depends on how big the opening and bleeding occurred. It was probably bad due to him experiencing pneumonia and 2 heart attacks. He may have had a chronic heart condition that was made worse due to the bleed and the diffcultly breathing due to blocked airway passages from the pneumonia. They will probably put him on some heavy duty IV antibiotics, give him respiratory treatments, and monitor his heart and him in the ICU for one more night until he is sent to a regular medical / surgical floor. He will be able to rest and recover on a regular floor. It is very diffcult for patients to rest in the ICU, mainly because they are so sick and the nurses and doctors and respiratory therapists are waking him at all hours of the day and night to maintain healing from this nightmare. He may experience mood swings, which is normal. He needs rest. He needs peace and quiet. He needs a good laugh, though. Laughter always heals the heart.

My daughter has spent many many days and even months in the Pedi ICU units. She has Stage 4 chronic lung disease and chronic atelectasis I was told many times she would not make it and everytime she did. She is now 13 and as I sit here typing is again in the ICU on artificial support due to pneumonia. Many many people come back from intensive care and do just fine, intensive care is set up for persons that need to be monitored closely and have specialized treatment. There are however those that do not make it. I am sorry to hear about the troubles your grandfather is having and I will be honest. If his kidneys are shutting down odds are other vital systems will soon follow if they haven't already. Its hard to hear but I'm being honest.

Stay positive, alot of people come out of ICU and make a full recovery. There is a real feal attatched to the word ICU...try to remember that if your uncle is in there it means he is getting the very best treatment and is under close monitoring. Of course some people do die, but what will be will be, just be there and support your uncle when he wakes up. If the worst does happen it will be because nothing more could be done and it is sometimes better to let people go than them live a life in constant pain and sickness. My very best wishes are with you. xx

Many, many people recover fully after a stay in the ICU. (My grandfather did, and he was in his 80's)
However, it can also be a one-way trip. Many people that would have just died suddenly in the past are "saved", only to deteriorate slowly as their organ systems fail. The end result is the same, but the time and expense are much greater.
The biggest predictor of your uncle's prognosis is probably his physical condition BEFORE all this hit. If he was a healthy guy, there's a good chance that he'll recover. If he was frail or infirm, the chances are not so good.
Best wishes to you and your family during this difficult time, and I pray that your uncle is home for Christmas!

yes of course you can come back and hopefully your uncle will make a good recovery and come back. He has been through alot so it will take time. It is possible to hear with sedation, although it depends on the strength and frequency of the sedation. he may hear at times and not at other times and he may hear fragments and not understand everything. It is good to keep talking to him however as hearing sounds will reassure him and encourage him. He will know you are there with him.

My brother woke up on his 47th birthday after ten days in a coma in ICU. He has lung problems and he got pneumonia. Pat R is right, the majority of people do come back.

I was in ICU for six months and I was given the last rites because they thought I was going to die. But I came out of it, al-though I am paralysed. If I had to give anybody advice, I'd say yes people can come out of ICU alive. Good luck and let me know how you do.
