HELLS NO! So yeah the whole thing started with a monkey bite, but you can't get AIDS from just petting a monkey.... even if you are "more than friends" you really shouldn't do a monkey!

NO, NO, AND NO AGAIN !! I have two monkeys, both new world species. The only monkey that you might contract an illness from is a macaque, which they carry the hepititas B viruse, then they would either have to bite you, or somehow bodily fluids from the monkey would come into contact with any of your mucous membranes. Monkeys take a bad rap for something that just isn't true !

It is true that it is thought that HIV (which does not cause disease is monkeys) was transmitted from monkeys to humans via a bite but it is not possible to contract HIV from petting a monkey even if you are more than just friends unless you exchange blood, body fluids, and or have sexual relations with the monkey. Of course if the monkey is HIV negative (or simian virus negative) then there is not risk under any circumstances.
