I did a luau for my husband for his 21st birthday and it was a huge hit. We gave out lei's at the door (you can buy a bulk of these cheap at the Dollar Tree or another 98 cent store, you can play pass the banana (you have to pass it between the legs so if your not offended by that, it's fun!), play hawiian music too, and for decorating, do streamers coming from all corners and in the middle hang a paper pineapple. Looks really cute! Also have tiki torches going if it's a night time or even if it's not super dark, have them lighted around walk ways and any paths or corners of the yard. You can also serve Macadamian cookies with cocanut in them, pineapple upside down cake, coconut rice, and pork if you don't want to sub sandwhiches. The pork is an Island tradition. You can also "hire" some friends to wear grass skirts and the whole "get up" and dance for you and your guests. I went to an actual Luau in Maui and it was AWESOME. You can get real pineapples (depending on how many people this could get expensive) and cut them into tall bowl shapes and serve your drinks in them with a crazy straw. They did this at the actual luau. Hmm what else? You could also get straw placemats or straw table cloths from any party store and use those and bamboo serving trays. Anything to add extra festive to your party. You could play "pass the coconut" too with the music playing and stopping. Hope that helps! Have fun!!

Most travel agencies will give you osters of Hawaii for decorations...make sure you have pineapple for the fondue, and raw chunck of coconut if you can get it where you are. Give the birthday girl a grass skirt, and go to the internet to resarch the various hula dances, and teach them at the party....if it is a large group (more than 6) divide them into groups of 2 or 3 (or 4) and have them come up with their own hula dances....they can all perform for each other.Another craft activity could include decorating plain picture frames with foam cut outs in hawaiin shapes. You can take photos of each guest with the birthday girl, and present them at the end of the party in the frame. The entertainment could be any of Elvis' Hawaiian flicks, or Lilo and Stitch, or South Pacific.....good luck!!

Give lei's (hope its spelled right) to the guest as they arrive....have a pineapple sliced right down the middle as your table center piece or in the center of the cake. Have a fruit tray with pineapple and hawaiian treats. Have a CD of Don Ho (you can obtain at your local library I'm sure) playing and have the birthday girl wear a grass skirt (shorts underneath of course...thats the father in me) Sweet and sour meatballs...I liked them growing up. The pineapple would be good for the fondue.....

We went to a luau on Maui in September and our favorite thing was the dancers. The entertainment is really what makes it special, otherwise it is just a regular party with a buffet. They had male and female dancers and a fire/knife guy. My niece worked as a Hawaiian dancer for parties with a few other girls. If you could find a company to provide entertainment, it would make your party truly memorable.

Check EBAY and see if they have any Tiki glasses for sale; you can have each guest use 1 glass and then have them take it home as a party favor; also on EBAY, buy some Hawaiian music on CD...how about bobbing for pearls....temporary tattoos....you really should have a roasted pig....check Food Network for recipes...
