Sauce is a generic term that means "liquid poured on food". Gravy is a type of sauce. Gravy is made from the drippings that come from cooking meat. However, gravy is NOT served on pasta in Italian cuisine. Italians use many different sauces on pasta. Usually those sauces have a base of either tomatoes or cream.

It's not a discrepancy. Most italians consider it gravy because they have meat in them. That is the difference between sauce and gravy.

What a bunch of WRONG answers with the exception of a couple. Gravy, Sauce or Ragu are fine. No not the Ragu crap in a jar. If you speak Italian then it's RAGU. Now that that's out of the way, why is that so important? BTW, Real Italians use the terms Spaghetti or Macaroni. Pasta has been used lately.

It's the same. To me, if it's red then it is sauce. If it's brown, then it's gravy.
