There are plenty of culturally-competent programs to help minorities with HIV, not just Latinos. And even mong Latinos, there are programs tuned towards different kinds of Latinos like Chicanos, Latinos from Central America, Brazilians and South American Spanish-speaking Latinos.

The first and foremost component of a culturally competent HIV support program is LANGUAGE. There are a lot of health professionals who speak Spanish (and those of us who do our best to learn).

Other major components are cultural beliefs and practices. In the Latino community, health educators pay special attention to the emphasis on gender roles, machismo and homophobia when they are trying to educate and intervene with HIV patients.

Look to your community-based organizations for the best examples of programs and interventions targeting la comunidad latina. One of the best examples I have seen is El Proyecto del Barrio. Check out their site at http://www.epdb.org/ I have worked with them before on ST health education projects. They do great things for the ENTIRE community, not just Latinos.
