How can I guess what kind of "unpleasant" smell you refered in your question? Most people from western countries can't stand durian's smell (they say it smell like cat's poop) but in South East Asia, it has been considered as "the King of fruit".
OK.. back to Indian food - just like most other have answered, it may be you that couldn't take the strong flavors of the ingredients. Next time when you try new Ethnic food, I would suggest you to ask the waitstaff for advices, like how strong the flavors or hot, spicy the food would be, they always can give you some good suggestions.

If you are speaking of Eastern Indian cuisine, (as opposed to Native American Indian food in the USA) then perhaps you are just not accustomed to they many spices and flavorings they use. Just give it a try, you will be surprised at how delicious this food can be.
