Blood pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped, and the size and flexibility of the arteries.
Blood pressure is continually changing depending on activity, temperature, diet, emotional state, posture, physical state, and medication use.
Blood pressure readings are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and usually given as 2 numbers. For example, 110 over 70 (written as 110/70).
* The top number is the systolic blood pressure reading. It represents the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts.
* The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure reading. It represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest.
Rough calculation-Systolic pressure=110+(1/2) the age. Diastolic pressure=75+(1/5) of the age.
Please note that the measurement 175/105 mmHg comes under High blood pressure.
Please see the web pages for more details on Blood pressure, High blood pressure (Hypertension) and Low blood pressure (Hypotension).

Diastolic is the blood flowing out and systolic is the blood flowing back. When you squeeze the BP cuff the "taps" tell you what your pressure of blood flow is. 175 over 105 is high, the "normal" can be anywhere from 110 over 70 to 145 over 90. Also, the low can be considered normal. My blood pressure runs 90 over 60. It's low, but still healthy. If your BP is high, you should see a doctor. Also, circumstances can change your BP, such as an accident or illness even stress can raise it.
Pulse rate is the times your heart beats in a minute. Average is 60-80

The 1st # is the systolic (when the heart pumps) and the 2nd # is the diastolic (when the heart rests). Obviously the 1st is always greater than the 2nd. There is no true definition of normal and why blood pressure increases over 115/065 (typical during sleep) increases is not known. There appear to be a dozen factors involved in the ups and downs of blood pressure. Blood pressure actually follows a pattern of variation similar to the low and high tides which respond to the moon. Curious lunacy.

Blood pressure is the amount of pressure in the arteries at two times. One is when the heart is contracting or squeezing, this is the top number or systolic, and it needs to be below 140. The second is when the heart is at rest which is when the chambers refill with blood, this is the diastolic, and it needs to be below 90.
Usually you will start taking medication if your readings are over these numbers more than 2 times.

I suffer from hypertension, and will be on Lacipidine tablets for life. This all stems back to having a bout of nephritis when I was 7yrs old.
At its highest its been around 170 over 117. Though to take an accurate reading you should be relaxed for at least 15 mins, not having just exercised, eaten a large meal, drunk caffeine, or feel too anxious, depressed or stressed.
A normal reading varies, but should ideally be at max 140 over 90 or preferably lower.
Healthy eating, good exercise and low consumption of alcohol, saturated fat and salt help to maintain lower blood pressure. Fresh veg, fish, fruit and especially bananas are really good.
I actually had to change my whole lifestyle when I got really ill. But I feel better for it.
High blood pressure can cause all sorts of ill effects; stroke, heart attack, bad eye sight, aneurysms etc. Worth taking seriously if you do have it. Theres plenty of info online.
