In a nut shell, aids destroys a person's immune system. You do not actually die from aids, but die from any disease that infects you once the immune system is down.
Children get it from their mother, not all do, but a most get it because when they are in their womb. The placenta connects mother to the child and this is the reason doctors believe the virus travels from the infected mum to the baby.

You usually die from common infections like pneumonia that the normal person could recover from but a person with HIV or AIDS gets doesn't have the immune system to fight it. Depending on the stage of the diseae they have very little or no immune system so every little thing attacks them.

noone has ever died from Aids or HIV. u won't find that cause of death on a death certificate anywhere in the world. You die from complications due to AIDS, and the weakened immune system it causes. Minor illnesses, colds, flu, bronchitis, etc. are extremely dangerous for an AIDS patient, bc their t-cell(the germ fighting element at the cellular level) is extremely compromised. You can also get Sarcoma, which is a cancer.

children are infected because pregnant mothers are infected
HOWEVER, the transmission of HIV from mother to infant can be LOW, IF, the mother is aware she has HIV and takes the necessary precuations to prevent the transmission from mother to child, there are quick methods for testing in countries of high prevalence to reduce this
that is, she takes the necessary medications, and avoids vertical transmission by reducing the exposure by opting for an elective caesarian birth, rather than a natural birth
to address you other points
HIV is now regarded as a chronic illness, much compared to the likes of diabetes thanks to the scientists that have produced the drugs to prolong life
HIV is no longer perceived as a death sentence, but rather, as I mentioned, a chronic illness
again, however, precautionary measures must be taken by the infected individual(s) to ensure that that their risk of catching flu is minimised, as this greatly increases their chances of becoming seriously ill, as opposed to people with healthy immune systems that can fight off such viruses
AIDS occurs when the HIV virus has attacked the immune to a degree where it becomes harder to fight off such viral infections and the risk of dying from common viruses increases
you never die from AIDS, but rather the AIDS related illnesses

as an HIV speaker with hiv & who has seen more then 20 close friends,ex-girlfriend die from hiv-aids,i can tell you exactly how the kids got it=parents during birth or from their mothers milk.the hiv virus slowly wears down the immune sytem, finaly the body can no longer fight ordinary infections, and yes its the worst death possable,as it is slow, very painfull, your mind goes=dimentia(this is my fear)and it is a slow downward progression ,and death is almost a relief, for the family involved, and especialy for the patient.
