start off by figuring out why you wanted to be vegetarian to start with. is it the ethics or the health factor?

if its because of ethics, think of how terribly animals about to be slaughtered are treated. historians have compared hitler's treatment of jews and other minorities to the way animals are treated in modern society, and nobody deserves that, not even defenseless cows and chickens and pigs and such. also, livestock takes seven times more land than vegetables. for every person that eats a well-portioned steak, seven other people will go hungry because theres not enough food for them. if you get the salad instead, seven other people will be able to have some bread or yams. thats not exactly how it works, but it's for better motivation.

if you chose vegetarian because its healthier, avoid most fast food places. vegetarians dont have much choice from places like mcdonalds or burger king. places like subway and blimpy are a little better but you cant get much outside of a salad or a veggie sub. instead, try going to organic markets. meat is still sold there, but in smaller quantities, and you can find out about some interesting alternative foods. also, when you're really tempted, imagine the unsanitary conditions of slaughterhouses. its not the workers' fault, but whenever that much blood and raw meat is being messed around with, its difficult to stay clean. diseases spread there as fast as malaria in the jungles. if you've ever read or even hear of the jungle by upton sinclair, you can use that as inspiration. just make sure you get enough protein!

i really hope this helped, and good luck!

In the beginning get educated. Read as much as you can not only on the methods of becoming vegetarian, but the ethics of it. This will help you keep resolve if it gets hard.

Make sure to get enough protein. Although it's very unlikely that you'll have protein deficiency problems unless you're starving yourself, having enough protein helps curb meat cravings. It will make you stronger. Things like veggie burgers (morning star farms and boca brands are best) and other soy-based foods are easy protein. There are many things you can combine to create a complete protein as well, such as rice and beens, macaroni and cheese, milk and potatoes, etc.

Making vegetarian friends is really important. They can give you lots of tips and tell you want to watch out for.

Another good rule of thumb is to check the ingredients on everything first. There are a lot of things you would never guess have meat products in them that do. There are also a lot of things that are vegetarian that would surprise you, like bacos.

Another thing that helps is to have a lot of good recipes. One really good cookbook is Vegan with a Vengeance. It has an amazing fake meat recipe. There are a lot of good cookbooks out there.

Good luck! We are all rooting for you! And don't let anyone fool you. Vegetarianism is a very healthy lifestyle. If you have any questions about that talk to a physician or consult studies done on the topic. Almost all of them will agree that vegetarianism will add at least two years to your life. It's a great way to live if you're ready for it.

You've already got lots of great answers, but I wanted to emphasis learing about how to get your protiens as a vegetarian and being sure you get enough protien every day through non meat sources.
Also, everyone's metabolism is different and some folks aren't cut out to be vegetarians, their bodies just don't adjust.
And for dogs sake, don't try to make your dog a vegetarian.

read up on it
get recipes
find nutritional info
join vegetarian communities (on the net if not in real life)
read ingredients on everything.
look for substitutes for your favourite non-veg things.

dont just eat what you eat now minus the meat. you need balance.
getting started you may either want to gradually get off meat or go cold turkey.
note: if you dont eat beans now, dont go into it full-steam-ahead because your body needs to adjust. if you go in full steam ahead, you may be more gassy

Start cutting out the foods you do not want to eat slowly. You will find that you don't even miss them over time.

cut out beef & pork first, then cut out chicken & turkey, then phase out fish. make sure to get your protein through beans, nuts, eggs and/or yogurt. make sure to eat plenty of green leafy veggies to get your iron. And consider a multi-vitamin (for vitamin B) and omega 3 supplements.
