Lipids including cholesterol are measured in mg/dL in the US and mmol/L on the remainder of the globe (mg/dL x 0.02586 = mmol/L) while mm Hg is the measure of blood pressure in the US and kPa elsewhere. The definition of 'normal' traditionally has been based upon the presumption of a gaussian distribution but it is arbitrary. For example in 1980 a total cholesterol of up to 330 mg/dL was considered normal but obviously this is not 'healthy'. The present definition of normal is based upon a cardiovascular risk assessment so there is no abstract normal.
