For Yozora on here, defending sushi and knocking those who don't like it...
I have tried it...several times in different high-end restaurants that supposedly have THE BEST sushi in the country. And to me, it tastes like something that just washed up on shore and laid there for a couple of days. It's the seaweed...disgusting...the cold rice...YUCK!...and whatever they have wrapped up and hiding inside of it. I have never tried the raw fish sushi, but I have no doubt it would only enhance my feelings further. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I know it's suppose to be healthy for ya, but so is Cod Liver Oil...and I don't put that on my menu either.

Most of the people who claim to 'hate' sushi have never tried it ... they should really say that they don't like the THOUGHT of sushi, but that's flawed too because most of them don't have a clue what sushi IS!!!
; )
These days, 'sushi' is seasoned rice. The seasoning includes rice vinegar. It can be shaped into rolls, with seaweed around the outside and something in the middle - it can be shaped into an oval / triangle / ball / rectangle (or any other shape you want) and decorated with whatever topping you like.
Yes, it CAN have raw fish - but not ALL the time, by any means.
Most of the people who hate sushi and they HAVE tried it were unfortunate enough to get sushi made with low quality / un-fresh fish. Now THAT is nasty - but it's not the 'sushi' to blame, it's the criminal claiming that the rubbish he/she sells IS sushi when it's just garbage!!!
Most people who've tried decent sushi either love it or like it. Some will dislike it, but even they'll be prepared to eat certain varieties of sushi ... they do all taste different you know..!! Frankly, I don't know what so many Americans are complaining about - the sushi they have easiest access to was created especially FOR the American taste-buds (you know, the ones half destroyed by ketchup and McD,) and it has no raw fish - often it's vegetarian! How can you complain about THAT?

Not everyone likes every food. It's a matter of taste. I dont understand why some of these people here are thinking sushi is raw fish though. The word sushi refers to the rice roll. Fillings can be fish or veggies. Most of the times the fish is cooked.

I think a big misconception is that sushi is raw fish. The name "sushi" actually just identifies it as a roll with rice and seaweed, and the ingredients can vary. Many types of sushi don't even contain meat, some are purely vegetable, some have tofu and mushrooms. The word for raw fish is "sashimi," so if you have a sashimi roll, that's when you're eating uncooked Nemo.
Sushi is also one of those types of food that many people are squeamish about without ever having tried it, but it's actually quite delicious. If you get a rice roll with crab and vegetables, put a slice of ginger and some wasabi mixed with soy sauce on top, and then eat it with chopsticks, there's something delicious and exotic about it, and yet it becomes comfort food very easily. It's one of my guilty pleasures.

Some people don't understand the concept. The japanese have always been known for being the most hygenic people on the planet. When europeans weren't bathing, the japanese were. Although the thought of raw fish doesn't always appeal to people, the fish is usually cut and served the same day it is caught and killed. If you notice in most authentic asian restaurants, you can choose your fish live and it is prepared immediately. Therefore you don't have to worry about worms and food poisoning. Here is a site below with more facts on sushi and sashimi.

sushi is not raw fish. The fish is either smoked or cooked. Sashimi is raw, I believe. I am a big sushi lover and I make it at home occationally, although I just can't make the rolls as tight as they do in restaurants.

Because Sushi is an "aquired" taste. My son loves it. He brought some home for me, I tried it and gagged it out.Couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for about an hour. Also, alot of people (including me) are just repelled at the thought of eating raw fish.

Unless you get a super fresh fish, many people hate sushi! It should have the taste of the sea and absolutely no smell; plus some like octopus is too chewy; personally, I love it with a thin layer of shaved sea salt....yum!
