Seed for this herb used to be available through Vermont Bean or Johnny's but was discontinued and they never answered my inquiry. The stem was ribbed, the leaves similar to flat leaf parsley, but it had a pronounced black pepper bite. It was great in chicken or turkey soup.

It may have been what is more commonly referred to as Chinese Celery (see picture here: http://chinesefood.about.com/library/blphotocelery.htm) that sounds more like what you describe.
