Okay, well I had tofu, and it was good, but it left a horrible after taste, I am vegeterian, and I dont want to eat meat, but i dont know how to not get a horrible after taste. I ate it with a salad, and it was an extra firm type, suggestions?

You may have some allergic reaction to it. Try it again. Tofu is starting to get a bad rep. along with all soy products because of adverse effects to the body chemistry of some folks.

It may have been bad, Tofu is a very clean tasting food similar to egg-white, and takes on the character of whatever it is cooked in or served with. If it left a bad taste the Tofu was spoiled or one of the greens in the salad was too bitter (like dandelion).Only use tofu that is creamy-white and virtually odorless. India is probably right and you got a bad batch. There is also a possibility that it was made with contaminated Nigari! NIgari is what makes tofu form and there have been confirmed reports of some companies using construction grade calcium hydroxide to make tofu instead of using the more expensive food grade product!! One other possibility is that I've seen some companies economize by using cheap gelatin to make their tofu firmer.

Good, fresh made tofu should *never* leave an aftertaste!

In a word? Marinade. I don't like the non-flavor of tofu but it can be hidden easily with tomato sauces and such. If you have to have it in a salad, try hiding it a little better~ go for soft or the meat crumbles

If everyone thought that you could only eat tofu plain, very few people would probably eat it. It's a little bland on it's own, but if you experiment with it, you'll find that it is incredibly versatile! You can marinade it with almost anything and cook it most any style and it tastes good! Hey Cool Dude,

I fry it so it becomes crispy. In the meat section or the fresh veg section of a super market you get spice mix sachets. I normally use the El de Paso spice mix. and toss the fried tofu in that and then eat it.

Maybe you should try cooking the tofu in different ways, you can have it for stir fry or cut it into pieces and put some salts and fried it .... or you can just steam the tofu and have it with soy sauce and sesame oils.

I understand I don't like the taste of tofu. Except i did get the soft tofu and whipped the devil out of it with a banana cream pie filling mix. Soy milk. But put in a pie shell with banana's it taste great.
Covered with nondairy cool whip.
I like cottage cheese with tons of fruit, nuts and whip cream.[cool whip] I have figured out ways of getting calcium and protein with things I like. Like Vegetarian pizza. Taco bell bean burrito. and the 7 layer job. I use morningstar farms grillers and corn dogs and regular hot dogs. No one even knows I am eating veggie.

your best bet would probably be to marinate it.

also, was it fresh? if you leave it in the same water for more than a day it goes yuck. you have to change the water it is in daily, unless you get it straight from the packet.

generally people cant eat plain tofu. i've been a veg for years and am only now able to eat it plain.

Did you cook it? I usually marinate(soy sauce is the easiest) it and then bake it, or fry it, or boil it too. It is just soybeans, and make sure it is organic!
Try to boil it for a couple of minutes, cool it down, and marinate it in the salad dressing for 30 minutes at least.
