If I had a nickle for every time I've heard how important it is I'd be rich. It probably is a good thing but in our household we often do our quality bonding and interacting with other activities away from the dinner table. (I LOVE cooking with my kids!) Unfortunately, dining together isn't always possible. If it isn't, make up for it in other ways. Bottom line: strive towards keeping the lines of communication open whichever way works best for you.

First of all, eating on a dining table is comfortable. I have eaten on straw mats placed on the floor when I was in India, but I prefer sitting at the table... This is regardless of whether or not there are other family members present.

With regard to dining family members, it is just nice, and a tradition that must go back to the stone age! I feel that we need to have time to dine together, especially since we in this era are
often busy elsewhere, studying or working ... It is nice to return home at night and find the table set for dinner, say .... and in my parents' home, breakfast was always served at the table ... also, it sets the stage for the children, who learn manners and getting on well with others, so that when they go out into the world, there is some background, some training, and hopefully the feeling of assurance that they are socially acceptable.

Dinner is usually at a regular time everyday, So it offers some regularity and something to look forward to. Dinner with family is also important because you have time to connect and share your opinions and ideas.
As to it being "ALL" family members, if the rest of the family can manage to sit together, but one person can't or won't, it makes a little more obvious that they don't wish to connect to their family, or at the very least don't find it important enough to make time to be with them.
Sharing food encourages bonding. If your favorite food has been offered, you automatically recognize that the person who made it values your opinions. On the other hand if you dine with others and many foods are available that they love and crave, but there aren't any there that you love and/or crave, you might feel more alone.
So in summary, Dinner is important for a sense of regularity in one's life, To improve bonding with others, to have an open and safe place to speak and voice your thoughts and ideas and encourage self-confidence, and to show you value the presence of your other family members by speaking with them and enjoying their company.

In my opinion, it is important to have dinner will all family members. It doesn't really matter where as long as you are together, sharing and spending time with each other. This promotes family unity and understanding.

In the 'old' days families ate together, played together, fought together...families were together. Today, we are all in pursuit of more money, more things, higher positions we've lost sight of the important things in life. If we go back to the days when family meant something we may see a change in the way the world is.

When the family eats dinner together they have an unbroken hour of talking time, and that is so rare these days. Families that do eat together seem to stay closer.
