good thought.... no one knows for sure, since no one has gone to hell, survivied it, and returned to say what happened.

it might be that one suffers forever?.... or that just the evil in the soul is destroyed... once the evil is gone, then the soul is released into heaven....maybe....

either way, it would be painful, so I just try to behave myself, so i do not have to find out.

What is the end result of sin?

Jesus died to save us from our sins. Those who do not accept His gift of salvation will receive death.
"The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. "Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:15. "God ... gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.

Answer: The wages (or punishment) for sin is death, not everlasting life in hellfire. The wicked "perish," or receive "death." The righteous receive "everlasting life."

What will happen to the wicked in hellfire?

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." Revelation 21:8.
The wicked are not immortal. The Bible says they will "perish", "burn up" and "be destroyed".

Answer: The wicked die the second death in hellfire. If the wicked lived forever being tortured in hell, they would be immortal. But this is impossible, because the Bible says God "only hath immortality." 1 Timothy 6:16. When Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden of Eden, an angel was posted to guard the tree of life so that sinners would not eat of the tree and "live for ever." Genesis 3:22-24. The teaching that sinners are immortal in hell originated with Satan and is completely untrue. God prevented this when sin entered this earth by guarding the tree of life.

Bible Clear--Wicked Obliterated
The Bible says the wicked suffer "death" (Romans 6:23), will suffer "destruction" (Job 21:30), "shall perish" (Psalms 37:20), will "burn" up (Malachi 4:1), "shall be destroyed together" (Psalms 37:38), will "consume away" (Psalms 37:20), "shall be cut off" (Psalms 37:9), "shall be slain" (Psalms 62:3). God will "destroy" them (Psalms 145:20), and "fire shall devour them" (Psalms 21:9). Note that all of these references make it clear that the wicked die and are destroyed. They do not live forever in misery.

Jehovah Witnesses recognize that hell is not a place or torture and torment for eternity.

Revelation 20:14,15 "And death and Hades were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire.

The second death is total annihilation even hell (hades) is thrown in. Separation from God is death as God a living God. God is love, and as most right minded humans could not wish to see someone tortured for eternity - even if that person was really evil do you think God would want to also?
We are made in the image of God and if it is against our own moral sense of justice to see someone suffer terribly, how much more so would God find it intolerant.
Death, as in no longer existing, is sufficient and just to those who reject the ways to the gift of everlasting life that God offers.
The lake of fire will consume Hades and death so no longer will people left behind will suffer dying.
1Corinthians 15:26 "As the last enemy, death is to be brought to nothing."

Hell is only imagination, but eternal death of the soul is true.
All religions teach that he who observes the laws of God will enjoy eternal life; he who acts against these laws, eternal death.
Hs who refuses to seek for the truth, already dies in complete darkness right at this moment.

I agree with Mav.

It is an eternal death, seperated from God forever. The soul will be tortured with the thought that they have rejected the very One who created them and loved them and made a Way for them to be reconciled to Him but they rejected that Way.

There are two ways to live.

In Genesis, Adam and Eve were told that if they eat from the tree of knowledge they would die.
Did their physical bodies die? No, they were separated from God. That IS death.
If your soul is sent to the eternal hellfire, you will be eternally separated from God - that is eternal death.

Matthew 10:28, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

You do not cease at physical death.

your body can't go to hell, it remains in the ground.
the soul goes to and experiences death in hell but this death is for eternity. the death of a soul only has a beginning and no end.
