There is generally some difference between versions with minor changes for instance SAP R/3 Release 4.0; SAPR/3 Release 4.0B etc; when there are major changes or additions to the SAP software names are usually change accordingly. After SAP R/3 is the SAP R/3 Enterprise which should be release 4.7 and above; and ECC follows and so on. There are obvious changes in between these release and name changes; for example, R/3 enterprise undergoes a major unlying enhancement by adding JAVA into the Basis's ABAP core to be combined to Netweaver. R/3 usually refers to the "simple" ERP software; ECC on the other hand, incorporates many additional verticals. Hope this helps!
