I am sponsoring a child through Children, Inc.
You can choose a child from one of many different countries. My child is in Kentucky. It's so great to get my child's letters and pictures. Only half of what I pay goes to the child, but I really like the organization. We have so much and I'll probably sponsor another child soon.

Like someone else stated, World Vision. Most religious organizations have these programs in place. Oprah.com would probably have a great list for review.
Good luck! I sponsor a boy at an orphanage in Mexico, just south of the Tecate, California border.

Yes, World Vision. It's a christian charity and they cater to needy children world-wide. They also posts pictures of the children that are in desperate need of a sponsor. They will also help if you wish to adopt a child. They are very good and they provide you with the best possible service.

Try Operation Christmas Child...The motivation behind OCC - Operation Christmas Child, is to reach out to children who may be refugees of civil war, survivors of a natural disaster, or victims of extreme poverty. The unique project of Samaritan’s Purse that enables caring people to share God’s love with hurting girls and boys in the far corners of the globe.

Donors take an ordinary shoe box, fill it with toys and other presents, and you have an extraordinary gift for a child in need of joy and hope. Most important, these shoe boxes provide opportunities for local believers to tell children about Jesus Christ through Gospel literature and evangelism programs. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15, NIV).

I know that there are alot of places to sponsor children through charities. However, have you tried speaking with your local Pastor? There may be children in your church who need sponsorship.
