The most probable meaning of this phrase in a narrative context is that she knew the other person or people so well, that she knew they did not like or approve of sherry, and therefore would never suggest or offer it to him/ her/ them. This version suggests that she did not suggest sherry.

If it was said in the context of a complaint, it would mean that the speaker was suprised, confused or angry at the actions of the female referred to, as she should have known that it would not be appropriate to suggest drinking sherry. This version suggests that she did suggest sherry.

Where did you find it? Sounds like it was part of a dialog in a book you read. If so, someone has been insulted that a female suggested they have a sip of sherry.
