because we are spoiled and we are sheep, if one bad review hits the car it's toast. consider r.nader and the corvair, if you maintain correct tire pressure the early units were no worse than the rest of the whales on the road at the time, the book came out, gm fixed the car already but it was dead. americans have wanted to drive their living rooms since the 20's , europeans want to drive a car , so they know to check tire pressure oil level etc. things that don't happen here , northamerican cars must thrive on neglect, plain and simple.

It looks like at one point VW was trying to upgrade all of their models, and they were going to make the GOLF/JETTA obsolete and the PASSAT would become the bottom end of vehicles. SEAT would become the bottom end for the VW line.

After the failure of the PHAETON in the US, it looks like VW reverted to their old plan and brought back the RABBIT and the JETTA will be here for some time. As for Skoda, it's easier to have VW/AUDI parts come from Mexico and Brazil. It would be too expensive to bring everything Skoda over.

Because it is not a name that would have any meaning in those markets, so they would have to spend money marketing the brand. As they use the Skoda name in Europe as the value-for-money arm of the VW Group they don't have that issue, as there was already some brand awareness, albeit slightly (and undeservedly) negative.
