the possible disadvantages are:
- many people are already used to the windows interface
- Microsoft refuses to offer a linux version to its applications such as microsoft Office. Although there are alternative products in Linux, many people find it difficult to switch after using a certain product for several years.
- some commercial applications are not ported to linux such as autocad, dreamweaver and others.
- Most hardware drivers are written by the community and not by the hardware vendors, so some new hardware that is not widely used might not be supported.
- Linux has many window managers (gnome/kde/xfce/..) and although this is good, it can lead to confusion since not all users get the same look and feel.
- Although the main part (kernel) is the same, there are many different distributions making IT support difficult.
Most of these issues can be resolved if linux gets mainstream since software vendors would find it sensible to make a version for linux and hardware vendors would be creating drivers for linux.

it is a bit tricky to understand and use compared to a windows operating system and might take a new user few days to get well versed with this operating system.
Some games do not run in Linux as the most widely udes O>S is of windows and so the game developers do not develop games specifically for Linux. the same applies for some software also
but apart from that Linux has only advantages. also it is almost virus free as most hackers do not create for Linux.

Unlike Microsoft and Apple which keep the code of their operating systems as a closely guarded secret, the code of Linux operating systems are open source. Therefore, somebody who knows what they're doing can write an algorithm to reveal the passwords of every account on a Linux operating system.

The big one for me is that not alot of games are compatible with it and same with some software. It is just less common and people look at you side ways when you tell them what you are running :P

No spyware, adware, viruses, OHHH you said disadvantages, well the main one I can think of is that Bill Gates doesn't own it so he can screw everything up and make it less reliable, oh *(&^ there I go again. Well sorry I can't be of more help.
