It's polite to speak first when entering a room, when in a business or social situation.
Which can be confusing, because when you enter a store the employees always greet you upon entering.
Hope this helps.

Neither, there should just be this uncomfortable silence in which you both exist until one or the other of you can't stand it and leaves. But actually I think the person already there should speak first and welcome the other person in so they don't feel so awkward. I guess it depends which room you are entering and who is there. But if you enter a shop I always wish the person there would leave you alone and not say anything because the minute they say something to me I just want to leave I feel embarrassed and can't look around in peace without feeling pressured.

Say Hello, and announce who you are, and why you're there, also even if you're a Janitor (not that it's a bad thing, I've been one) answer the phone correctly..... answer like this....

"Good morning, Joe Canoli's Fish market, Canoli speaking"

It Say's a ton of information, in only a few words, people appreciate it if you save them time, by making sure that they've contacted the right place, and right party, right away. They already like you, you just saved them time ! time is more important than money, time you can NEVER get back.

You should speak first, greet seniors first and say hi to everyone. If they are your aunts, call them by their names like "Hi Aunt Mary". Don't expect your seniors to greet you first. If they answer hi to you that is fine.
