like if you had no ice it would spill every where(i know put a lid on it) but if you got ice the less of a chance it has ending up in your lap.

It is not boyuancy, it is the fact that a larger floating object stops the "wave action". YOu could put small pieces of wood in your cup and get the same reaction. However, the ice melts in the water and you can drink, or chew on it. The wood, Nope
