The pronunciation of á, é, í, ó and ú is actually the same, but the accent means you must stress this syllable. For example, "América" is pronunced "ah - MEH - ree - kah", whereas without accent it would be "ah - meh - REE - kah", and the meaning of word can change if you don't stress the correct syllable: "canto" means "I sing" and "cantó" means "he sang".

The pronunciation of Ñ s just like "ni" in "onion", and the ü is used only when the U follows a G after which it shouldn't be pronunced. You usually don't pronunce the U when it's between a G and an I or E, whereas Ü has to be pronunced. For example "güiro" is pronunced "gwee - ro", whereas without accent it would be "ghee -ro".

The accents on vocals in Spanish are meant to tell on which syllable you should apply and stress when you pronounce the word... but the pronunciation of each letter is the same with o without the accent...

And ñ, is another letter ;) has a different pronunciation from n

I would like to say that an a with an acute accent on like á is pronounced like 1,5 times longer than an ordinary a, and not necessary stressed. Cortes and cortés.

Never is right about the accents but forget to mention the ñ, which changes the sound to the sound of the first n in onion, and umlaut u(my keyboard doesn't have easy access to that one) which also changes the sound. gue would be like gay and the other is like gwey

the accent tells you which syllable to put the most stress on.
