Ive recently applied for credit, but the lenders advised that i have £14 against my name unpaid, which i cant understand. They adv its from a retail store-Now the only thing i can think of is that i have a store card with the arcadia group, which i have paid off in full a few months ago so the balance is now zero.Yet this £14 has been owed since dec 2004. Why has nobody contacted me before to advise i owe this money.I have recieved no letters, or phonecalls and now when i ask for credit i get refused even tho i was not made aware i owed anything..The lenders have adv to get a credit report from experian which i have sent off to do, but when this comes through i am not sure what to do next. Will i be able to pay off the £14, or will i not ever be able to get credit due to this reason. If its the latter then i am not happy, as i feel this is unfair. i pay off my bills reguarly and never miss payments? anyone else had similar situation. did u manage to settle the debt and get credit?

There is a methos that allows you to correct inaccuracies on your credit report. So find the £14. get in touch with the company involved and then get them to confirm that you paid. you let experian have this confirmation, they are legally bound to take it off your report. They also notify anyone you ave approached for credit within the last X months and then everyone is happy.

and if you do find out you really owe it, you pay it off and everyones is happy that way as well.

What I did was contact the company I owed and paid it off. I then asked them to update my credit report and I also wanted a letter to proove the payment had been made and the account closed.

Updating your credit report can take approx 1-2 months so I waited 2 months and applied for my credit report. It had been updated in that time.

However if a default is on your file I have been told these can follow you for around 6years. All isn't lost though as you can put information of your own onto your credit report against and entry. On this entry you could put down what you've mentioned here to support any credit applications you make.

This information is read by any company doing a search on you so can help with further applications.

Good luck.

U can sort this out. I had a similar problem with a catologue company. Once yr experian report comes u will see where the money is owed (even tho u don't owe it). contact them and ask them to explain y u owe it and let them look into it. Owing 14 quid shudnt really affect anyfin if u r clear everywhere else. If it's not owed then the company have a duty to contact experian and get it taken off. Good look on sorting it and I only wish their were more ppl like us who paid off our bills!

Contact experian and ask for a copy of your credit report. (this should be free...although they're allowed to make a small administration charge of a couple of quid).

Then you'll be able to see exactly what the problem is and can contact the company and experian to get it resolved.
If its a judgment against you you might not be able to get it removed, but can get it marked as 'satisfied' (i.e. paid) which should help.

It might also be worth taking out a couple of new store cards and spending just a couple of quid on each and paying it off in full on time.
Do not use the cards for more than a few quid and make sure they're paid in full and on time.
This will help build your credit score.

when you get your report back from experian you can contact them and ask them to have any information that is wrong corrected or deleted. if you share a house it is possible that someone else in the house has uncured this debt in this case you can tell experian that you have no financial links to them in this case it is deleted from your records. you should only be paying experian around £5 tops for your details. you can also contact the arcadia customer service group and ask for all the details the hold on you. this can be done if you ask for it under the data protection act it will cost you around £2 again you have the right to change any wrong information. always remember that wrong information can be changed and once it is changed your record becomes clean and there will be no record of it on your file.

Challenge the credit report..Deny the 14 pds was outstanding.make the credit agencies validate it with the company that reported it..and make a statement for your credit report that this is absolutely a falsehood and never happened especially if it can't be validated then if it can't be validated ask for it to be removed from your report..The statement of denial becomes part of your credit report for all other creditors to see your side of the story..Good Luck..
