this is a very controversial issue. For one thing, religious people, esp. conservative, argue that the death penalty is hypocritical and morally wrong (to kill a killer).
I read somewhere that 1 in 7 people on death row is innocent. That's a lot to me...and also, I think life imprisonment would be a WAY better *punishment*. They should spend *time* reflecting over their conduct and hopefully, they will mentally suffer from boredom in jail for the rest of their life. That sounds more of a punishment rather than executing them--that would be like a favor to them.
...so I go with life imprisonment.
..But really, for some cases, like Scott Peterson, I already know how guilty they are for their sick crime and I'd like them to be executed as much as the next person. But when you really think about it, life imprisonment is better.
For the comment below me:
"none of it. I like to think of a better world..."
...well, thinking in a utopian manner gets you nowhere. We all want an ideal society with perfect people. But that's fantasy. Not reality. Sitting on a fence is pointless.

If I'm guilty of the crime, I'd rather have the death penalty because I could not imagine spending the next 40-50 years locked up in prison. Even though I could still read, take classes, etc, while in prison, it would still be an ordeal to be there for decades.
If I'm innocent of the crime, I want the life sentence in hopes that someday evidence will be found which will clear me and allow me to be released.

Life imprisonment.
It's just too easy to make a mistake. Look at all the cases in America where DNA evidence is now clearing people who've been given a life sentence. In many death penalty states they are refusing to allow the testing of DNA evidence for appeals. It makes me wonder if they are scared. To me the death penalty isn't about justice at all, but more about revenge.

I would prefer the death penalty when there is no doubt about the person who committed the crime. For those who think life in prison is better, why? The person who committed this crime had absolutely no regard for the life of the victim, why should we grant him any more for his life. In fact the appeal process of these convicted criminals should be shortened. Most of them spend several years in prison anyhow. When there is no doubt , scientifically or morally, then death is the only true Justice for a murderer.

Death penalty. My younger brother killed a man in self defense, and I see 1st hand what the system does to a man. It if FAR worse than death, and to those of you saying otherwise, I see it day to day. You do not.
Side note-To Jackie: You are either mistaken or lying in saying conservatives are against the death penalty. That has always been the balywick of liberals.

Life imprisonment is better, you still enjoy life in prison and make the most out of it. Change for the good and be given a reprieve.

i would have to say the death penalty. life imprisonment would just be like torture and very boring. everyday not being able to think things are going to get better. not having anyone to talk to. i think i would rather be dead, as long as i wouldnt have to suffer.

if it suits the crime, yes death penalty is the final act but for someone who cold heartedly kills another person or plans someone death, they deserve the death penalty, same with child molesters, rapists and arsons, there is no excuse for these crimes, life imprisonment is giving the convicted felon an easy time for the crimes that he commited.

in crimes involving the rape/murder of children -then yes the death penalty is a must for PROVEN cases. all the rest life imprisonment should mean exactly that-life without the option of parole.
