If it is an overheating problem and, assuming the lamp comes on, it sounds like it, you should check that the air filter isn't plugged.
Specifically, most projectors use a fan to blow cooling air past the lamp, and to prevent dust getting into the optical assembly (and potentially showing up on the inside of the lens) they use a foam filter behind the input grill. This filter has to be cleaned about once a month (or replaced), as specified by the manufacturer.
It is also possible you have the projector mounted so as to obstruct flow of cooling air (for example by having other components too close to the projector or even sitting it on a carpet or something soft that cuts air flow.
You may be able to save it yet ...
