That's something I could never understand. But I assume it has something to do with the fact that this world has made Christmas into a commercial holiday rather than a religious one.

My non-Christian family celebrated it because is was part of the culture we lived in. We didn't get into the Christian part of it, but we had a Christmas tree, and learned that Christmas was a time of giving, and of family closeness. There are lots of aspects of the Christmas season that are easily made secular, but still meaningful and a positive influence. The idea of peace on earth and togetherness are universal.

Why not? Christmas is not Christian. The date and the customs of Christmas are all based in paganism. So the real question should be: Why do "Christians" celebrate Christmas when it's not Christian?

Not ever one celebrates Christmas we had some people that lived next door to us and She would lock her kids up inside and not let them out until Christmas was over. That was very sad because my 2 sons went to school with her boys.
May God bless you

I'm an atheist. I don't celebrate Christmas. I have the day off, have a good meal with my family, relax, and maybe go for a walk if it's nice. We exchange presents. But in no circumstances do I celebrate Christmas. You can calm down now.

Christmas was taken from a Pagan holiday (Yule), so why should it only be Christians to celebrate at that time of year?

Christmas is actually a holiday started by the Pagans. However, I celebrate Christmas, but I don't celebrate it for the presents, and the food, and such.. I celebrate it to remember the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ (even though he was not born on this date).

Why do people ask questions just to piss everyone off? And that Sunshine girl who said Christmas was a pagan thing - Girl, it is called CHRISTmas! If the pagans had something going on then it was totally a different thing than Christmas. The entire reason for Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Some people prefer to call it as the winter holiday and don't even associate it with the religion. X-mas decorations - lights, trees, shopping, presents, Santa, etc. come to mind more than religious stuff. And that particular day isn't even the real birth date of Jesus anyways.
