If your stop over is at night...you are in for a treat...take the mag lev train from airport to city centre (takes 8 mins by train) or 45 mins by car...its that fast!! Go for a drink at the hyatt hotel....bar is on 85 floor of the worlds 3rd tallest building.....and the views...think of the movie bladerunner.....a 1000 newyorks suck together, neon as far as the eye can see....amazing...shopping cant help you there...was on business the whole time never go a chance....but the views and the energy of that city is enough to leave you awed! Have a great trip.

take the mag train into the city and check out the bund, nanjing lu (road) & huai hai lu (road). go to the bookstore and look at a shanghai lonely planet book for shopping suggestions. yuyuan gardens is a great place for tourists to visit for shopping.

8 hours is barely enough for just visiting the downtown area which is west side of the HuangPu river. Just Nanjin Road which is a pedestrian area with shops, restaurants and you name it, is good for killing an hour or two by itself. See the following site for choices.

if you like shopping go to Xin tan de (spelling not correct) or go to peoples square.
If you want a few beers go to Henchen lu (irish and english pubs near)
If you like tourism places visit the pearl tower, the bund, and the museum near peop-les square.

Stay put at the airport......or else you will surely miss your flight ,the traffic in the city is un-imaginable.
