Couldn't agree more, it makes questions almost impossible to make sense of.
maybe I'm getting old but why can't we leave text speak for texting?

Agree. I can understand why people use it for texts, but it should stop there. On the other hand, writing on here doesn't have to look like a thesis; I find notes & some shortcuts OK, such as pls and btw; so where to draw the line?
Taken too far it makes it an effort to read, and I often give up. Language is about communication, and text language makes it harder, not easier. It feels insulting to the English language.
It concerns me a bit that we are storing up problems for the future - that these teenagers will teach their own children that this is normal spelling.
However, it could, of course, be to deliberately 'get at' or exclude oldies - Slade were doing it when I was a kid - remember Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Gudbuy t'Jane & Tak Me Bak 'Ome? But that did get on my nerves at the time!

I agree and there is no excuse, that its technology! Have these people not got a phone with predictive text? I have four mobiles. Three of them have Predictive Text , the other has a qwerty keyboard. Before that, I had a Sony with Predictive Text and a clip on Chatboard!
As for age, I started out with a Nokia Cityman (Google it) when they where new and a Motorola Pager. In those days, Text messaging involved Verbally Dictating the message to a woman on the Pager's Number!
I then bought myself a Nokia 101 (which made my boss sick as a parrat!)

I think that there is a time and a place for text type & in some cases, it is on here. Like for instance if you are writing something really long, it is easier just to text type, but sometimes, you do need to type properly. It isn't really a good idea to text type all the time because you can become almost dependent to write like this & this doesn't put you in good stead for when you are working, because sometimes you need to work on computers & if you are so used to using text type, it becomes difficult not to write in this style! I know this because about a year ago i found it difficult to type normally when i decided to take up an ICT course & it took me about 3 months just to be able to bypass text type & type normally. It can be a difficult rut to get yourself out of.

I think this is an Internet chat forum used largely by teenagers. They get hassle at school and hassle from parents. Do you not remember being a teenager? Can't they chill out? Don't get me wrong. I'm worried about the general decline in spelling, punctuation etc in real life but not Yahoo.
P.S. Judging by the previous posts on this thread, ie. the use of the word 'unliterate', people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Absolutely! Why should I need to re learn my language and buy a Texting Dictionary just because they cannot be bothered to write out the word in a decipherable manner?
I sometimes get text messages which i cannot decode for the life of me.What is the point in that?
It is like the inane LOL. Who in their right mind puts that at the end of every sentence?
Well, not me anyway!!!

I agree with you. Text language should only be used for texts!!
Having said that, I still prefer to write "proper" English in my texts unless I haven't got enough space - I then shorten words so I only send one text instead of 2.

I agree - use of abbreviation and contraction is okay when you have to use a non-standard keyboard, or if you are being charged per letter, but there is no excuse to use it here, especially as the forum has a built-in spell checker!

I totally agree, I don't mind spelling mistakes as you can still see what they mean but this new text type can be quite difficult to read. See in my day....

It makes for a very difficult read. I don't mind spelling mistakes, as everyone makes typos at time to time, but text speak just gets jumbled for me.
