The Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

RPCV C. Gallagher wins Editor's Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry

Returned Peace Corps Volunteer C. Gallagher has achieved his first publication with a poem titled "Closing the Door." The poem was awarded the Editor's Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry by Poetry.com, and was released on April 15, 2003 as part of the 'Finding your Wings' anthology published by the International Library of Poetry (http://www.poetry.com) in the United States. The anthology will be published in both book and audiocassette form, and future publication of the poem in the U.K. will occur with the release of the 'Theater of the Mind' anthology by Noble House.

CLOSING THE DOOR

Be a part of the action, it said
the sign hanging on the wall
be all you can be.

Pondering the possibilities, he
glanced in the window, reflecting upon

A fleeting childhood, recollections of dreams
and fragments of memories
Metallic mementos of villages destroyed
and a single hand laying on the desert
as if continuing to wave at those who
destroyed its owner
Or reaching out to shake the hand of another
or to shake the life somehow back into the
still warm child

A jolt and a start; the memories cease and
A young boy approaches, moving closer
Silently he crosses the sidewalk
and before he can be stopped he has crossed
through the threshold--the recruitment
office door, leaving his childhood behind
