What your relative is talking about here is called "natural family planning," which is the only acceptable form of birth control for Catholics.
Artificial birth control, such as condoms and birth-control pills, is not acceptable for Catholics.
For Catholics, the sex act must be committed in a way that is free of any artificial barriers to the creation of new life.
It's not true that Catholics "can only have sex with your spouse if you decide to have children."
Every marriage, and every sex act, must simply be open to the possibility of children -- that's all that God requires.

The Church's views on human sexuality are so obviously absurd that the majority of Catholics (as well as everybody else) simply ignore them. H. sapiens is one of only a few species in which the female is sexually receptive when not fertile, and if you apply evolution, the reason is obvious: sex helps keep the family together, which means more children will reach adulthood and reproduce. The evolutionary reason is just as valid today, and it is disgusting (although not surprising) that the Church has not figured this out. Incidentally, there is a precise technical term that applies to women who attempt to control pregnancy through timing of sexual activity: they are called "mothers."

God created sex for two reasons. 1. For us to be fruitful and multiply...and 2. For us to enjoy our spouses.
The only instance I find in the Bilble where God is upset with a husband and wife having intercourse is in the case of Onin - where he acually "pulls out" during climax.
God was not upset that Onin was having intercourse with his wife during a time in which she was not fertile - He was upset that he spilled his seed on the ground and simply did not give his semen an opportunity to fertilize his wife's egg.
However, God certainly wants couples to enjoy eachother in marriage - read Song of Soloman.
Further, God wants us to be disciplined and have self control.
Simply put, I do not think that God wants us to use the pill or condoms (or any other modern form of birth control), but I think that he would have no problem with a MARRIED couple abstaining from sex until they believed they could have intercourse without the "fear" of having a baby. This would require discipline and self control while they made sure that they could provide for their future family.

The bible says marriage is a blessing, not a curse!
Matthew 23:9 says "call no man on earth your father (speaking of teachers among God's people: ie. priests), for you have only one, your Father in heaven."
but I guess MOST, not all, but most don't seem to pick up on the many differences between the bible and what the priests say. I am a former Catholic so don't get too offended.

I think your right. Your relative, in order to be in accordance with Church teaching, must always be open to life when making love. Natural Family Planning, which is what you're talking about here, is meant for couples who are financially strapped or have so many kids that the mother is losing her mind and the husband's so stressed out he can't function; it's not meant to be used so that the couple can do their own thing.

I'm not going to weight in on the religious aspect of this question but i would like to point out that this method of only having sex during times of low fertility in the cycle is not a good one to rely on. It is true of course that women are more likely to get pregnant during certain parts of the cycle but there is no part where it is impossible to get pregnant.

It can lead to pregnancy and often does. A woman can ovualte at any time during her cycle (spontaneous ovulation etc), plus sperm can live inside a woman for up to 5 days after having sex...
The pull out method isnt that affective either.

last summer, i was in physical therapy, and each day a preist would be in the next bed away from me (it was a catholic hospital and he was the offical preist there) A topic similar to this came up among him, and the therapy staff members, and he said that natural birth control is accepted in the church, such as honoring the menstral cycle, so your friend is right.
what the church DOES consider wrong is artifical birth control, such as birth control
