Home and Pro are the same product with the exception that you cannot connect to a domain with home and home cannot receive incoming connections for remote desktop.
So unless you need those 2 features there really is no reason to upgrade to pro.

1) You wont lose anything as long as you upgrade with the disk and dont re-install completely.
2) You should be able to get this done at local computer shop for about 50 quid, but if you want to own the disk then look about for deals.(You can ghost pro after computer shop has done with needs done).
3) Yeah by all means wait for Vista, but im waiting at least 6 months for the bugs, if any, to be ironed out.
4) Does the laptop run Vista .
5) Xp Home costs money and unless you really need Pro then I would just leave it, home is a fine O.S no matter what anyone says and with a bit of know how can do anything pro can do with a little more work involved. (Im discounting Networking here as i know how good Pro is for that, saying that i can network home with a bit of work).

Probably ordering an upgrade pack of Windows XP Pro via online would work out cheaper. However, make sure you purchase it from trusted sites.
Some of the mutimedia features might not be avaliable in the Windows XP Pro version and also make sure you back up your files before the upgrade there might be a possibility that your files or any software installed before the upgrade be removed or get deleted.
For details you may want to do a thorough search at www.microsoft.com
Hope this helps!

No, you cannot change Windows XP Home to Pro.
Well, you can buy a Pro. But, Windows Vista is out in 3 months time, i decide you wait till Vista is out. So far so good, the RC is not bad, but i bet Vista cannot support a lot of stuff.

Go to the website for Windows and select the upgrade system and select the XPpro and they will ask you for your credit card number and send you a 15-20 digit security number and then give you a download site that is exclusive for you. Then you will need to put in the code and it will upgrade and verify and register your new program all together. it's a lot fast to do it straight off of the web. as long as you have a credit card or debit card.

You can get the upgrade almost anywhere, I'd suggest Wal-mart or someplace of that genre. They are the least expensive places for it. You shouldn't lose anything from your laptop, but you might want to do a backup for your files just to be safe. That's usually a good idea anyway. If you have the system restore disk(s), you can reload your files if there is ever an incident with a virus.

You should not lose anything -
Wal-mart or Target - get the upgrade box.
throw the disc in and relax...until the bill comes in
BTW - I thought i wanted XP pro - just as happy with theHome version - I think pro is for programmers or IT people

Free and simple way is 2 options. Torrent it or look for a Windows XP Pro Transformation pack. (they have one out for Vista now) But to torrent it you'll need Bit Tornado and with that installed go to Isohunt.com and find it there maybe.

you can pick up the cd online for about 90 quid.
you will need to back up all of your documents, then format and re-install. the added features of pro probably aren't worth it.
i've run both, and for what i do, there aint much difference.
either that or download a dodgy copy, and activate it with a hack, update using mublinder.....
there is always a way!
