Seems like you have gotten a correct answer in here.
The branches of the military are:
The Army, Navy and Air Force. Anything else, as in the Army National Guard (falls under the Army), the Marine Corps (falls under the Navy) and Coast Guard (falls under Homeland Security) aren't actual branches.
The one thing that does sadden me about nearly ever response here is that most people seem to think the Navy only does things on the water. That's just plain not true. Yes, the Navy has a ton of destroyers, submarines, aircraft carriers, etc... but take a look at things, the US Navy has more aircraft than the Air Force does.
You can't say that the Navy's job is just to move the Marines from place to place and fight battles on the sea. That's not what we do. In fact, the Marines now have their own ships and move themselves around.
The US Navy, the main portion, is divided up into Battle Groups. These Battle Groups consist of an aircraft carrier, several destroyers/frigates, a sub and other support ships. These battle groups can go anywhere in the world on a moments notice. Within a day or so, we can have a massive supply of US military force anywhere we need it. It would take the Army and Air Force weeks to do what we do.

Originally it was just the Army and the Navy. But then the Air Force split off from the Army, and the Marines from the Navy. Though the largest and most resourceful branch is in fact the Army. Which has its own infantry, boats, and planes, they have more service members than all the other branches combined.
And the puddle pirates are a branch as well. (Coast Guard)

In the USA...
United States Army - Deals with Tanks, Helicopters, Light Infantry, and general land warfare, builds bridges etc...
Role: Foreign and Domestic Defense
Commanded by: Department of the Army
HQ: The Pentagon
United States Marine Corps- Deals with Maritime and Land warfare, commands Air, Land, and Sea support (They have their own planes and ships..) and they have the fastest deployment of troops in the world. They can deploy almost anywhere in large amounts..
Role: Power projection from the sea.
Commanded by: Department of the Navy
HQ: Arlington, Virginia
United States Navy: It's the navy.. They carry the Marines to their destinations, they are generalized in maritime warfare and they provide support from the sea..
Role: To maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.
Commanded by: Department of the Navy
HQ: Not Sure.
United States Air Force(Used to be part of the Army, now it's its own branch[1947])- Basically they specialize in space and air protection.
Role: To deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests — to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace.
Commanded by: Department of the Air Force
HQ: Not Sure
United States Coast Guard (Not really a military, but yeah..)- To protect the water and the coast of the US and to prevent drug smuggling and smuggling in general and to search and rescue downed ships.
Role: Protect the public, the environment, and the United States economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.
Commanded by: Department of Homeland Security(Peacetime)
Department of the Navy(Wartime, currently now)
HQ: Not Sure
Then there are the nation guards and reserves, each branch has a reserve or a nation guard, (Nation Guards)-they may be called into battle only serving 1 year tour by the President or they may be called to help their state by the Governor..
Army Reserves- Army
National Guards - The State Militia
Air National Guards - I'm guessing this is the Air Force, or maybe something different
Navy Reserves - Navy
Coast Guard Reserve - Coast Guard
Marine Corps Reserve- USMC
Air Force Reserve - Air Force. Or this might be the air national guards.
Usually the military of different countries USUALLY consists of the Army, Navy, and the Air Force. Some countries may have the Marine Corps while others not, same with the Air Force. But almost all countries will have a Navy or an Army.
Except for some countries which have no military like Coasta Rica or was it Puerto Rico? Well which ever it is, they converted their military power into education and LOT of people there are literate.

There are 5 branches in the US Military. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, and Coast Gaurd. All 5 are considered part of the military because they all fall under the jurisdicion of the Uniform Code of Miltary Justice (UCMJ).
If you want to get technical, there are only three departments in the US military. The Department of the Army, Department of the Air Force, and the Department of the Navy.
The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, and the Coast Gaurd is actually in the Department of Homeland Security

Geronimo answers true. Army, Navy (including USMC), Air Force. USCG may be shifted to Navy control but is now in Homeland Security. Each of those 3 have active and inactive reserve components. National Guard is not really national, but organized state militia which can be nationalized. And then there is the largest group of all, alluded to in the 2d amendment, the bulk of the militia, which is the armed civilian force capable of fighting when needed but under the least degree of day-to-day governmental control.
