From a genetic standpoint there is only one race; the human race. When we talk about different "races" we are actually just talking about different people groups; we are all genetically identical.

race is a word that is out of favour. It is like the word subspecies. Both words have very negative connotations to them. An equivalent word today is variety or strain. Variety is usually used for plants, strain or breed for animals. If you think of dog as a species then you could think of Doberman Pincher as a race of dog.
We are different enough from the rest of the great apes(genus) to be considered a species with different races or varieties(4 being generally recognized) but as said the word has such negative baggage that it is generally not used.

the human race is the way you describe, then there are racial subcategories (IE, white, black, asian, hispanic, etc.)
all animals have sub categories as well. (IE, dogs and cats have different breeds)
we are all unique due to our heritage and our intellect and our character.
