I suspect it's an allergy but how can I find out for sure? It is most annoying for people around me as the presistent throat clearing is irritating. Does an allergy cause any other health problems?

Beware of a severe reaction:
"Anaphylaxis is a rare, life-threatening emergency in which the body's response to the allergen is sudden and affects the whole body. It may begin with sudden itching of the eyes or face and within minutes progress to more serious symptoms, including:

Varying degrees of swellings that can make breathing and swallowing difficult
Abdominal pain
Cramps
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Mental confusion or dizziness" http://www.webmd.com/content/article/61/67459

Other symptoms which may be ignored can include:

Swelling - Do your shoes or rings feel tight?
Itching - Do you find that you scratch an area more than usual?
Reddish skin - Does your skin look pinker than usual, does pressing momentarily on your skin leave a white mark like when you have a slight sunburn?
Rash - Do your arms look like they have red spots (like the pores of your skin are red)?
Welts - Does your face (or other area) usually look smooth, yet, after eating these foods, does the skin have a bumpy appearance?

Hope you get to see an Allergist. At least a test can provide an answer.

I am 65 and have never had allergies. BUT in the last 2 to 3 years I have developed a serious allergy to yeast.

I thought initially it was wheat and because of my throat closing twice (totally) it truly frightened me. I have now determined it is clearly yeast. The anaphylaxis is truly terrifying.

So allergies can pop up at any age.

Yours sounds like mine when I get a little yeast, there is yeast in many many things. Fresh bread will close my throat before swallowing. So I eat no bread made with yeast.

Just avoid the offending food. Just stay away from rice. If you don't eat it you shouldn't have any other reactions.
