How do police officers handcuff someone if he only has one hand? Do they cuff on of the cuffs to a belt loop or something?

Bella, If the one handed man is wanted for murder, he would NEED to be cuffed..one free hand can still grab for an officers gun.

By policy anyone being arrested is to be handcuffed, esp if being transported in the police car. ( this was a policy in every department I ever worked in)
You can cuff to the belt if they have one on, but most officers carry in thier car a waist chain, to be used in very serious cases, or for people with a broken arm, one armed person and so on.

You happen to have answered your own question. The normal procedure for handcuffing a one-armed prisoner to secure the unused cuff to a belt or belt loop, if available. Sometimes officers are faced with some tricky situations and have to be creative when restraining people. Many agencies actually have guidance in their policies for restraining people in unusual circumstances (the very sick, the elderly, limbs missing, etc)

I once arrested a one handed man. I did not hancuff him. He complied with his arrest (as most people do) and I took him to jail without incident. Handcuffing to a belt loop would not work well as it would be quite easy to tug the cuff and break the belt loop which defeats the whole purpose of handcuffing. A waist chain would be an option, but very few officers carry a waist chain on patrol. I don't.
I suppose each officer would deal with such a scenario on a case by case basis.

That is a really interesting question... never even thought of that.
And sadly I have no idea how they actually do it...
They may simply use a plastic waist tie off of some sort, perhaps double looped to pin the single hand/arm to the back...
Gotta think more on this one...
Good question.

They can use a waist chain that fits around the suspect's waist and the handcuff attaches to that.
