The other night, my 5 year old son smacks his older sister causing her to have a nose bleed. This was at the encouragement of one of his acquientances.

We did have an immediate discussion and he was immediately reprimanded by having to go to sleep early.

I can't help but feel more needs to be done. Should I leave it at this or is further punishment required?

Beat his butt, or put him on time out...no..just beat him!!! He'll learn, I did!

It's too late now. You could've done more then...but getting after him or punishing him so long after the fact will do no good. You really need to do the punishing immediately so he knows exactly what you are upset about. The longer you dwell on an incident, the angrier you become, and may give him an unjust punishement. If you want more discussion, that may not be bad, or give examples of what not to do and who NOT to listen to. Maybe you could have a follow-up discussion about what is right and wrong no matter who tells them to do it, the only one they really need to obey is Momma and Poppa. Good Luck!

Well, possibly, but you met his agression with a punishment. Now you should talk to him about his role as a brother. You didn't give your girl childs age, but if he is a Big brother so much the better. If not explain about how boys NEVER should hit girls, how hitting anyone is a bad plan, and how talking things over is more useful.

I think as a first time punishment for this behavior is fine. if he does it again, you may want to swat his butt one good time so he understands this is a major NO-NO! I know how difficult it is to spank, but sometimes it is neccesary. this day in age it is unheard of and parents are put down for spanking children, and we don't do it because our parents did it, so we know how it hurts, but, didn't it teach you not to do something again? a spanking is nothing to put a parent down for, it's a child abuser that needs to get put down on, and I saw a few comments on here who had thumbs down for encouraging beatings, that is not neccesary, but a good spanking is!

Tell him under NO circumstances is he allowed to hit girls. This needs to be drilled into boys as soon as they are able to talk.

I think you should have spanked him in front of his acquaintance.
