They provide habitats for organsims and are an entire ecosystem. they help keep the water regualted by controlling how much carbon dioxide is in the water. If the coral reefs died, the carbon dioxide levels in the sea would change so dramatically that it would affect almost all life on earth. In some cases, they act as a barrier between the ocean and land and protect the shores from strong currents.

not everything has to have a purpose, it can just be there because God chose it to be, but i'm told clownfish can hide in them from preditors.
