I wish I could help you, but I am having the same problem and have no clue what to do!. I felt sorry for a guy, and now have no idea how to get rid of him. Not an easy task! I tried that "we are only friends" thing, didn't work! I felt sorry for him, but only created more problems for myself/

Honest and straightforward. Pull the plant from its roots, quell the fire in its infancy. It hurts, but it hurts less than sawing down a tree branch by branch, then the trunk, and then the many hopeful roots which develop therefrom. Be honest, dont code it or anything, because if you give him reason to, he just may think youre covering up the fact that you like him. Meh, you know him better than I; you find out what the best way is.
By the way, are you reading him right? Are you sure? Maybe hes not even interested in a relationship. Nevertheless, make sure youre right whether you think he is or isnt, and its better to extinguish nothing than let a fire grow by your doubt.

no need to be rude to him or anything, sometimes it's ok to tell a little white lie to save someone from getting hurt, so be honest with him, you owe him that, let him know gently (next time it comes up) that you only see him as a good friend nothing more, no need to tell him it's cause he's too ugly or anything, keep looking beyond his outer image cause one day he may just seem like the most beautiful person in your world. He may not like you that way either.. but if he does, maybe you could say to him that you really like him as a friend , and that you have your heart set on someone else. cheers!

Just say it outright. In a circumstance like that, you don't want it to escalate. Be very clear that you're only looking for friendship with him and though he's nice, anything more wouldn't work.
You have to set boundaries early. Be firm, but not mean. Tact is the key.

Just Come out with it and Tell Him(Face-to-face).
Just be sensitive and tactful when explaining your feelings, emphasize the positives about knowing him,but make it clear that He's a Friend to you-Nothing else!

Talk to him in person. Just tell him before he becomes more in love with you.

if you didn't like him, then you shouldn't have given him your IM. you are officially leading him on now. congrats.
