Asthma itself should not be painful unless you are using excessory muscles to help you breath. Astma itself is a spasm of the upper airway (bronchi). It does cause you to be unable to expell the air in your in your lungs, therefore causing you to not be able to draw in enough air to re-oxygenate your body. This of course causes you to feel short of breath. My main concern would be a pnuemothorax. This can be caused spontaneously or due to truama. It could be that during an attack you coughed to hard causing a small tear in one of your lungs allowing air to enter into your chest cavity. How long has this been going on? I would get a hold of your doctor for a follow up. You might need treatment. Emergency treatment if it's new and a pnuemothorax.

Asthma is an allergy and is triggered by something. The best non medication treatment for asthma is learning your triggers and avoiding them. Common triggers are smoke, dust, mold, mildew, plants, dust mites, pets and grass/weeds. If you can not figure our your triggers, you may need to see an allergist and have allergy screening done. This may point out your triggers. The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication. Controller medications are steroids (Asthmacort Asthmanex, Flovent, Pulmocort), Leukotriene modifier (Singulair, Aculade, Zyflo) or mast cell stabilizers (Cromolyn sodium, Intal, Tilade). You may want to talk to your doctor about several strong controller medications and maybe Xolair shots. If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.

Check out http://www.naet.com for a site about how to eliminate asthma. My mom HAD asthma, but did this treatment and it worked great for her. Also, check out the book "Say Goodbye to Illness" by Devi Nambudripad. It is written by the doctor who developed the alergy eliminition technique.

I know exactly what you mean, I get that sort of pain also- especially when I run, (also especially when it's cold outside). But I've recently started taking Advair and I'm amazed how well it works.I highly recommend it and really think trying it is worth a try.

Anxiety can also cause asthma attacks. I have had one or two that have hurt because of the narrowing of my airway. Talk to your doctor about this, he/she should be able to help.
