Because people don't want to die.
Think about it: the purpose of a military is to kill people. Why would anyone spend all the money necessary to maintain one if there wasn't something to be gained from telling someone "either do [X], or I'll kill you"?
There are only two ways to keep someone from using military force (or the threat of military force) from taking over the entire world: either convince everyone on the planet to not care whether they live or die (an impossible task), or make a military big enough to defend your country from any military that would want to attack you.
Luckily for us, the strongest military powers (the U.S., Britain, China, Russia, France, Germany, India, Pakistan, etc.) don't want to conquer the world with military force the same way that Napoleonic France or Nazi Germany did. But some smaller countries (and non-state entities) do sometimes try to achieve their political objectives through force.
Say, for example, you're a politician in a small democratic nation. The easiest way to win an election is to kill anyone who looks like they would vote against you. It sounds ridiculous, but it happens a lot in some parts of the world.
Or, say you want to instate a worldwide Islamic Caliphate that forces all people to be Muslim and live according to the whims of a conservative Islamic theocracy. The easiest way to do that is to take over a small country (like Afghanistan), and then talk people in other countries into staging revolutions and joining your cause. In two hundred years or so, you'll have a big enough military to challenge countries like the U.S., the E.U., China, Russia, and India. That's the mission of al Qaeda.
The only way to keep people like that from succeeding is to deny them the ability to use force. Sometimes, this can be done through diplomatic or economic means. Sometimes, it can only be done by killing them.
And so there's war. In the first case, the people being ethnically cleansed will probably start a rebellion to attack the army and/or paramilitary troops who are trying to murder their relatives and neighbors. If the war gets big enough that it starts to destabilize other countries, large military powers (like the U.S. or European governments) will step in. That's how most wars start these days.
The other form of war, the ideological war best exemplified by the U.S. vs. al Qaeda conflict, is best fought by throwing out the theocratic government (the Taliban) of the small nation (Afghanistan) and replacing it with a democratic government. But since the Taliban doesn't WANT to be thrown out of power, they've responded by trying to kill people associated with the new government (whether that means Karzai loyalists, American soldiers, Canadian soldiers, or little girls going to school). And the only way to stop them is to kill them.
That's why we still have war. And that's why we will continue to have wars, until the day that we all decide there's nothing worth living for.

How can the world have peace when we individually have no peace? The moment that everyone looks within themselves and create their own peace and happiness 100% of the time, then world peace would automatically be achieved.
Too often we are bombarded with fear, anger, apathy, lust, grief, and other negative emotions. This makes us emotionally unfit to have peace within and that's why there is no peace in our world.
But is it possible, I believe it is. We can start peace by giving ourself peace- one by one.

Reality of human behavior such as politics, economy and religion. It takes a people to make a peace but the people want the other people to be their politics, their economy and their religion, no room for tolerance

Human nature. Even in this day and age we far too often succumb to our old ways of tribal warring, aggression, conquest, and emotional irrationality.

Because of man. Think about it. If a woman was president, there wouldn't be all this violence. War is a creation of MAN.

due to human nature of "desire".. desire of power, fame, money, etc... and selfish to think more about "I, me, mine".. all these lead people to quarrel or fight between individaul, countries and nations.. it's not easy to get in peace even in one person mind... it's much more difficult to get peace in world...
So it's impossible to avoid wars.. but we can try our best to reduce it by maintaining peace in our mind and also in our surroundings.. :-)
