For years, I've struggled with two things regarding my stomach: 1) Whenever I drink something hot, such as hot tea or hot chocolate, I get very bad cramps in my stomach. But with cold drinks, I'm fine. And 2) Almost everything I eat ends up giving me gas pains/cramps. It's like clockwork, I eat dinner(it can even be something light that isn't too greasy) and the next morning I have cramps for a few hours. My Dad always seems to have to go number two also(not to sound graphic) so maybe it's just genetics? Or could it be something more?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, see your doctor about it

The symptoms you describe and your family history are consistent with Celiac Disease (CD). Celiac Disease is very common (one person in 100 in the U.S.) but is rarely diagnosed (less than 3% of patients with the disease ever get properly diagnosed).

CD is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. It often causes cramping, diarrhea, flatulence (gas), fatigue, and a whole host of chronic, ill-defined symptoms. It can also cause no symptoms at all!

CD is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins called glutens/gliadins. These proteins are found in wheat, rye and barley. The only treatment is avoidance of glutens and gliadins. There is no drug or other 'medical' treatment, which may be the reason most medical doctors fail to diagnose this common disease.

Please note: IBS - irritable bowel syndrome is NOT a diagnosis. IBS is the label doctors use to describe a patient with bowel complaints when they cannot figure out the cause of the problem.

I hope you find this helpful. You may want to ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist with expertise in CD. Sadly, most docs are clueless about it.

Best wishes and good luck.

Stomach problems can become numerous and the reasons could be many things from nerves and stress-to genetics. Your best bet is to have a chat with your family physician about your problems. He or she may want to refer you to go see a gastroenterologist. This particular doctor deals with the stomach and between the two of you, hopefully can come up with reasons why you are suffering with this and how to treat the problem or maybe even prevent the problem.

Good luck to you and I hope you feel better soon!
