The reason the CEL comes on when a gas cap is loose is because the emmissions system is getting a false fuel vapor reading. This is one of those "clean air" systems on newer cars. Your car thinks the cap is leaking fuel vapors because of a bad seal. You have a charcoal cannister and several other "scrubbers" that all work in tandem to keep you vehicle emmsions low. If you tighten the cap and it keeps happening try replacing the cap, they do go bad. Also go to autozone and they will run a CEL check for FREE!
Good luck.

I owned a 2005 Ford Mustang GT. It had only 10,000kms on it when the check engine light came on - the dealership that checked it out said there was a heat valve stuck open and it would take going into the motor to fix it. Also said it was a common problem with that particular vehicle. Sadly...I traded it in for a truck. I just figured for the amount of money it cost and for the low usage it had there should be no problems at all.

Everybody saying to make sure you gas cap is tight is correct, BUT also if you ever leave it running while fueling it will set the CEL also. So even if its really hot or really cold outside, and you dont want to turn off the car an it get to cold/hot inside, turn it off while your pumping gas. Thats if your doing that. If you dont do that and you know your gas cap is on tight or have replaced it, then go to the Ford dealer and ask to talk to a service manager. Some of the dealers are pretty good at screwing you out of warranty repairs so be persistant, and it might be a good idea to take a male with you as a lot of the A--Holes are just that.... Ford doesnt like to admit something is wrong with one of their cars, more so than other dealers. Good luck. Have worked on many late model fords that the dealer wouldnt cover and have faught with many of them about even recall repairs. Take your warranty papers with you, and a guy that knows somethin about cars. Dont mean to sound sexist, but these guys are trained to treat women like they dont know what theyre doing. If they STILL dont help you, take your papers and friend to another dealer. If you still dont get it resolved go to Ford.com and make a complaint there. Telling these dealers your going to contact the main office might also get you somewhere or it might not. Be persistant and dont let them charge you for something on a brand new car.

I don't own a 2006 mustang but I have heard of the gas cap causing the check engine light to come on if it is not properly seated. If you keep having problems you might try taking it to another Ford dealer.

Is the warranty gone .....find a Ford representative ( ask nice to talk to the guy when he is a the dealer next time--- be tactful and be pleasant--- remember you get more with honey---- this is a Ford problem and they should take care of this for you.... it sounds to me that the dealership service writer put you off so that they did not have to pay for warranty work---if I'm wrong then sorry....wc

The check engine light will come on if the gas cap is loose, but the dealer should plug the car into a coder reader and see why the light is coming on.

You may have a fuel vapor leak. If the check engine light is on, there is a code for it being on, though with vapor leaks it takes time to find it. Don't pump fuel with your switch on.
They might have a service bulletin for your problem that they didn't come across yet.
