Whenever I tell a christian that I believe in Jesus but I don't follow the bible, they go nuts and tell me that it's not possible to do that. Ever since I heard all the comotion about how the bible critices gay people, and how there's over 50,000 mistakes in it, I just went "You know what? Screw it" I live my life by the quote WWJD. Just because I'm a believer in christ, does that mean I have to follow the bible word for word? I watch those christian channels and how they're always reading quote after quote after quote, about how abortion, gay marriage, and divorce is wrong, and I don't want to be like that, is that so wrong of me?

You go girl!!!!

There is a passage in the prayer service at my temple that is repeated every Friday night. Basically, it says, "that which is hateful to you, do not do to others. This is the whole Torah - the rest is commentary." I'm paraphrasing but that is what it says. Lead a good life and everything else will be alright. If other people don't like it - to heck with 'em.

I guess maybe they want to know then "what" Jesus you follow then. Is it a Jesus you made up to suit what you feel more comortable beleving? Because no one can love or follow anyone without knowing who they really are. I understand its frustrating that society says something is right and the Bible says it is wrong, but.... If that's how God wants it, we can't change it.

The you have all these people telling you theres all these mistakes and guess what? They dont exist.... most of the mistakes they claim are solves if the Bible is read in whole and not one verse here and one verse there... that would make any book look like it was a mistake. Fact is, the Bible is the most indepth description of Jesus. Other writings about Him dont include most of what He did. So, you either follow the Jesus of the Bible... or, a Jesus that man turned into just a nice guy... or one you make up yourself. They cant all be right so which do you choose?

I see your point, and I think it is a good one, but all that junk on CBN and whatnot is not real Christianity. They do not interpret the Bible properly, and they take it literally.

The fact is that the Bible *is* flawed... it has some very important teachings in it but it is very old and has been translated countless times. Also, it was compiled under some odd standards (it had to be written in Hebrew, for example, or it didn't count) and was edited by many different people. Some stories were told for many generations before they were ever written down.

So yes, there are contradictions, and there are problems with the text. The important part, which you are getting at, is to act in a Christlike manner and not worry too much about exactly what the Bible says.

Let's see, you believe in Jesus but you don't follow the Bible. You live by what would Jesus do, but you don't follow the Bible. You don't want to say abortion, gay marriage, and divorce is wrong, but you want to do what Jesus would do. Boy, I'm confused! Who tells you what is right or wrong, and who tells you what Jesus would do if you are throwing out the Bible? The Bible is Christ's words and His Word. Perhaps you might spend less time watching those "christian channels" and more time on your knees.

I'll be honest with you like some of the others have been. Jesus is the living Word of God. The Bible is the written word of God. They cannot be separated, nor contradictory of one another.

Who has told you there are 50,000 mistakes in it? Dear one, since the Bible is clear about some things being sin, and bad for humanity, just trust it. God loves us too much to give his son to die to pay for our sins, then give us a bunch of flawed information to learn about Him from. He paid too high a price, and for that He would expect His word to be perfect as He is perfect.

Good for you...I'm glad to see someone who got the message and didn't get caught up in all the garbage and mudslinging. If you follow that philosophy you will be keeping the Commandments, and remaining faithful to the doctrine of salvation. All the other stuff just breeds intolerance and hatred. There should be more Christians like you.

this is so funny. Here are "good christians" insulting you and your question. I think it is just a fair question. It is good for you to think by yourself instead of following orders. As long as you live a good life and harm nobody, you should keep that spiritual side and keep searching for the right answers. And for the people insulting you : JESUS would NOT agree with those behaviours!!!!!

The ultimate rule of Christianity is "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." I think WWJD is more or less the same thing. If more Christians followed that, it would be a much better religion.

I guess you make sense, but can I ask you then, how you came into believing in Jesus? I am just curious. As an atheist I can't exactly answer your question but I think you make sense.

You have no idea how good your question makes me feel. You are a christian that thinks. WELL DONE. I believe that you are on the right path. You do not need an organised religion, don't let them draw you back.
