I have a 1 year boxer who has a swollen tail. Their doesn't seem to have any kinks in it but she won't let anybody touch her tail. The tail doesn't seem to be causing her serious pain but she is only wagging the tip of her tail and not the whole tail. What should I do?

It is possible for dogs to still be able to move the end of their tail, even when it's broken. For example, if a person crashes their car, they could have a broken neck but still be able to move thier arms and legs. My dog recently broke his tail when he leaped up into the air and failed to catch himself before he hit butt first onto the ground. He is able to move the end of his tail in a slight wag, but other than that it hangs straight down and is very sore to the touch.
The vet won't be able to do much for your dog other than give him pain medicine or something of the like, which you could do at home. Call your vet to see what over-the-counter human pain pill he recommends for pain relief for your dog and ask what dose to give him. Watch your dog for the next few days and if you notice any lack of appitite, lethargy, or loss of control over his bowels then take him in because that will signal a deeper rooted problem. Don't worry too much though, this is a common injury for both dogs and cats alike and it will usually heal by itself perfectly fine.

If the tail has any kinks in it (a sudden change in direction that is not rounded) then the tail is likely broken. If it is broken your niece abused the dog--you cannot give a dog a light tap and break a dog's tail. She should pay for the vet's bill and NEVER Be Left Alone with the dog or any other pet again. The dog is in enough pain to take to the vet. The bone may not be displaced except when it is lifted. Do not lift the tail anymore--you could cause further damage even if the tail is only bruised. It would have to be severely bruised for the dog to be reacting this way. At the very least your niece needs to understand that her action was TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE and will not be tolerated. If the bone is broken and it were me, I'd seriously consider reporting her to the ASPCA...especially if she's ever been seen to harm an animal before this occasion. Good luck with your dog.

If the dog had a broken tail it would just be limp and she would not be able to wag the tip of it. Also, when animals tend to break their tails they lose control of bodily functions...you would know. The tail is bruised or there could be another health reason for it.
