I'm a senior in hs and my best friend is an illegal immigrant.
It's time for us 2 go 2 college next year n he's having a lot of trouble even applying to colleges bcuz of he's an illegal immigrant and does not have a social security number. Is there a way for him to go 2 college?
He's a good kid, with like 3.7 gpa n he's really good at soccer. He plays for the school team n he was the captain 4 his junior yr.

I mean him being an illegal immigrant isn't his fault. He got here when he was like 11. what would u know about being illegal to the country and all that crap when you'r 11??. Now it's been 7 yrs since he's come to this country and it must be very frustrating for him to not be able to college just because he's an illegal immigrant.
I know some poeple just get disgusted about illegal immigration and I'd thought that way too but i don't know how i would feel if i was my friend. His parents are the one who brought him, and it isn't his fault. He shouldn't b disadvantaged.

Were his parents here illegally? Did THEY ever get legal? If they were legal and the only reason he wasn't was because he was a child, he can file for citizenship. If they were illegal he will need to see an immigration attorney. He might be able to get a student visa until his citizenship goes through. He will need to file for citizenship though.

I know a young man whose parents brought him here when he was 4 years old. His parents came legally and brought him. When he got older he had to file for his citizenship himself. He got his citizenship about 2 months ago, he's 22 now. He did it the legal way, the tedious, long time consuming way. But he did it the RIGHT way. Not illegally. He resents those coming here illegally and expecting amnesty. Tell your friend to talk to an attorney for professional legal advice.

I agree with A. McP...'s answer 100%. I understand it's not his fault that he is in the "illegal" catagory- but he is, none the less, in the United States illegally... There are avenues that your friend can take to become legalized... In fact, immagrants do it routinely... on a daily basis.
A department within the Justice Department would be a good place to start. You seem to be an intelligent person, maybe you and your friend ought to work on his dilema together.Check into student visa's & so forth..
One thing you MUST remember, The phrase "illegal alien" (immigrant)... means just that, a U.S. law has been broken. I would have so much more respect for your friend, as well as the countless others in his situation, if they would just follow the rules & come to this country legally. Best of luck to your friend.

So what's with the pity story? He SHOULD be denied, AND disadvantaged for getting the free education he didn't deserve in high school. Now the gripe is that he can't get into college?

He should be mad at his parents for not going through the proper immigration process. It's their fault. There's a due process for immigration.

MY grandfather was denied 4 times before getting to America, but he did it legally. That's why I have absolutely no pity for any border jumpers who feel that they are entitled to ANYTHING when there is a process available. It's slow, and it sucks. It was back then, too.

i understand that your friend has limited resources and disadvantaged due to his illegal status...but he can definitely apply for college and still be accepted...i had a friend in high school with the same problem....he applied to city colleges within his locale ...and he didnt hv social security number either....the schools that he apply to will provide him with an id number to use while enrolled in that college....ofcourse he would have to take the SAT and pass the minimum requirement for reading, writing, and math...plus he will have to provide proof that he was a resident of that State for more than 12 months to receive the State's Resident Tuition...he will then have to pay for all the school expenses...tuition and books etc...BOTTOM LINE IS...YOUR FRIEND CAN INDEED ATTEND A COLLEGE ....ALL THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS DONE OVER THE MAIL...SO TELL HIM NOT TO WORRY SO MUCH...BUT HE MUST BE VERY CAREFUL WHO HE DISCLOSES HIS IMMIGRATION STATUS TO AND HE WILL ALSO HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THE SCHOOL EXPENSE...NO SCHOLORSHIP OR GOV'T AID FOR HIM...GOOD LUCK TO YOUR FRIEND....

Just tell him to move to California. Here, the illegals don't even have to pay out of state tuition. Ironic, isn't it? A student/citizen from a nearby state like Nevada has to pay the out of state tuition rate while an illegal alien doesn't. Go figure. Anyway, tell him to move to California.

Good to see that you have a good heart. Helping him to get legal would be the best solution. You will get hate responses because these people do not believe that no one for what ever reason should live next to them if they are from another country.

i wish i could help with that question but i really don't know much about that. i would recommend he talk to an immigration lawyer they usually can get a temporary social security number until that matter is resolved. that can help him with collage and collage can help him with his immigration status ;)

Nothing I know of. You might want to look up the process of naturalization and sees if he fits in one of the loopholes. Ask a lawyer, he/she might be of more help than yahoo answers.
