tryptophane

Turkey does NOT make you tired. It is a myth. Every year you hear how "Tryptophan" in Turkey makes you tired. That's a load of BS. What makes people tired on Thanksgiving, or any other holiday for that matter, is binge eating. Excess caloric intake spanks your system something fierce....and then you crash... just like eating too much sugar.... same thing.

If you don't believe me, go to the NIH website. It's all there.

It is called Tryptophan is an amino acid and essential in human nutrition. According to popular belief, tryptophan in turkey meat causes drowsiness[9]. Turkey does contain tryptophan, which does have a documented sleep-inducing effect as it is readily converted into serotonin by the body. However, tryptophan is effective only when taken on its own as a free amino acid. Tryptophan in turkey is found as part of a protein, and, in small enough amounts, this mechanism seems unlikely.
A more-likely hypothesis is that the ingestion of large quantities of food, such as at a Thanksgiving feast, means that large quantities of both carbohydrates and branched-chain amino acids are consumed.

Tryptophan. But it actually only makes you tired when you have an empty stomach. The real reason you probably get tired after turkey dinner is carbohydrate overload.

I've never heard of that before Turkey is very healthy for you. I THINK its all the other foods that we eat on Thanksgiving and all those deserts that make us tired....What do you think?

Technically its called triptophan but there is not enough of it in turkey to have a significant affect on drowsiness. In fact there is the same amount of triptophan in both beef and pork. The reason people often become drowsy after eating on thanksgiving is because they eat so much their digestive system has to work hard and uses more blood than usual. This causes a shortage of bloodflow to the brain resulting in drowsiness.

Sometimes basking in the sun, really drains you. If you are talking about a turkey, (fowl), having to fight my grandfather over the wishbone, which I think I should enjoy with my mom but he thinks it is his to break with who ever he chooses at dinner.
