Well I don't think you would have the money eaten up within a few years by the government. If you were to take a lump sum and then pay your taxes on it you would lose something like 65%. After that you are done with taxes to the best of my knowledge. On the other hand you would have to worry about all the people in your family attempting to just mooch off him and what not. I believe he says he would be in debt because it is hard to care about finances when you have tens of millions of dollars. Also many people who win the lottery actually end up bankrupt within a few years of winning because they overestimate their wealth. Of course anyone would want to not work again, but a life where you don't need to work to attain anything is worthless in my opinion. I can tell you are probably about maybe 12-15 years old because you assume all of your problems would be solved. That is probably true to a certain extent, but not everything can be solved with money. I feel very sorry for you that you think money creates happiness, but in a culture such as ours what else are you supposed to think. Once you do a little more maturing you'll understand why money may not solve all your problems and quite possibly could create more problems and more complex ones at that.

He's got a point, but I guess you really don't know unless you've walked a mile in a millionaire's shoes (and I can imagine how expensive those would be). There was a millionaire a few years back whos daughter was killed, plus the winner himself got arrested multiple times. I like to dream about winning the lottery, but I think of spending the money by helping out friends and relatives. I don't have the latest and greatest computer, TV, or lifestyle, but I'm happy with what I have.
If you won the lottery, just image all the mail coming to your house from people pretending to be long lost relatives. What if you have needy relatives who won't get off your back until you've given them a fair share of your winnings? Maybe you know how uncomfortable it is to share with someone that you make more money than they do. Now multiple that by 1000X.
I still say that even if I win the lottery I may still want to work. I personally feel like I have to be productive. I'd rather make something or create something, even if it were my own business, rather than doing nothing or playing video games all day (you get fat basically from the lack of exercise). I believe that money does buy happiness, but not without a price.

Believe me, i know i would love to win the lottery and win that money too but in life i have learned that the money is just emptiness that we try over and over every time to fill up an empty space. You cant fill an empty space with something that is just empty. the definition of insanity is trying something over and over again expecting different results but the results are always the same. anyways if you want great money like that don't expect to get it form the lottery, go out into the world and show others how you can be successful! that's all i got to say!

People think that if they could only hit for the Powerball jackpot, or whichever, all their problems would be solved. In actuality, what happens is that they trade one set of problems for another. Granted, many of the new problems are welcome ones, since they come attached to new found wealth (ex. What do I invest in? Should I vacation in Tahiti, Paris, or Barcelona? Should I feel guilty because I'm starting to like Bush and the Republicans?). Others aren't so welcome, because there is one thing for sure...the more money you've got, the more people there will be lurking around trying to separate you from that money. People who become suddenly rich like that often have a problem of being able to trust ANYBODY...even to the point of thinking that their spouses are thinking of trying to con them out of the family fortune and then splitting. And then there are those who lay their hands on this huge pile of cash and spend like an out of control Congressman...you'd be surprised how many of these jackpot winners wind up broke. So it ain't always a day at the beach, and money can't buy love (unless you count going down to the local shelter and picking up a new puppy--that works for me) or happiness (have you ever seen even one episode of any soap opera? What a bunch of rich but miserable people.) but ya know what?? I would love to have the chance to find out!!!

As you get older you may understand. Do an internet search on those who have won the lotto. I watched a documentary on lottery winners and none of them ended with happy stories. The money went to their heads! and they had family coming out of the woodwork demanding money and it would change your life's values. Your dad sounds like a smart man. Life isn't about money! It is nice to have but imagine wanting for nothing. How boring would your life be??? Think about it. Your dad is right.

Ur the last person who should win big money like that if u really believe money = happiness...u'd b so disappointed. If that were true why then do so many rich n famous ppl commit suicide, do drugs, drink to excess, marry multiple times, etc..that doesn't sound like happiness to me. Sure, u would hv all the material things u wanted but u would also hv different problems from the ones u hv now.

A large percentage of lottery winners commit suicide after they win big because they aren't used to dealing with the stress that money brings. People wanting money from you, not having anything to strive for because you can just go out any buy anything, etc. It can definitely be more of a hassle than a blessing.

Money doesn't buy happiness. If you won millions, everyone that you know or even that you don't know would expect you to give them some. Where would you draw the line, only family? Or only really good freinds? Or no one. Say you buy a large house and land, you would still owe tons of money for property taxes every year and upkeep and heat, etc. It would get to be really expensive.

A surprising number of lottery winners couldn't cope. Some have committed suicide, one chap didn't see the point of carrying on with his job, but didn't know what to do with his spare time either, so ate and drank himself to death in about three months. We often complain about our daily lives, but sudden wealth would have the effect of cutting us off from what is familiar to us -- our working companions, our neighbours, even our friends, who might assume a completely different attitude towards us. People feel that they have to move away from their familiar surroundings to somewhere posher and they are thrown in with a set of people whose values are very different and with whom they don't have anything in common, apart form money. If they don't move away, they get criticised and arouse suspicion. I've known some very rich people. If they've always been wealthy, they cope with the situation. Sudden wealth attracts major headaches. You have to worry about crime of various kinds in a way you never did before. You and your family could be targets for kidnapping if the news leaked out and be killed as a result. You couldn't take a harmless stroll down the road. You couldn't even relax in your garden. I knew of a very wealthy couple who were burgled one evening and beaten up by the burglars, tied to their bannisters and left to their fate. They didn't die, but it was a near thing. If you suddenly become rich you have to cope with feelings of guilt and actually need counselling to sort out those feelings. You have to take all kinds of financial advice and make complex tax returns. You might even have to live in several different countries, moving from one to the other, for tax reasons. That's not as much fun as it sounds.
Would you really like not to work again? I think you'd soon get bored! I totally agree with your dad!

I believe God sometimes wants us to be smart enough to figure out how to create our own wealth, that way if we ever so obtain it through his will then we will remember how hard it was to be poor and be more likely to help others.
