Satanism started during the middle ages in Europe when the Catholic Church was the main political power. The Church basically had a choke hold on the peasant population who were living in dire poverty. As a reaction to the suffering and misery, many peasants chose to worship Satan who encouraged pleasures of the flesh. So Satanism is both rebellion against the Church's choke hold and a desperate attempt to escape their misery.

Satanism is worshipping Satan as the supreme ruler, instead of God. As one Satanist once said, it's respecting the ultimate rebel. I don't know much about it, but I do know that they do not do human or animal sacrifice, and that if you follow the rules it's actually supposed to be pretty peaceful.
