My cat had a brother who we adpoted at the same time. His brother died about 1 year ago. I absouletly can not get another cat but my cat, Smokey, really misses his brother. he goes in our basement (the last place he saw his brother before we took him to be put to sleep) and cries. I really want to help Smokey but i don't know how.
Also:
My cat is a Maine Coon Tabby, know for not liking being alone, being big, and keeping their youth(he is SO playful)

The best thing I can think of is to get him a baby - a little safe stuffed cat or dog that he can love. Also, give him a lot of attention. They grieve like we do and it takes time for them to get over a death

bringing in another cat, grown would be wrong as then smokey would feel not only has his brother left but now he is being replaced.

best thing is to get him a kitten. taking care of something younger and smaller than him will make him feel useful and needed. might be rought for first few days, weeks even a month. but in time they will be best of buds.

I lost my siamese linx mix after just 3 yrs due to cancer and have another 2 yr old cat....had to get a kitten for zoey cause she was going around crying cause the siamese was gone. at first zoey hated the kitten, would try to beat her up, etc.....today....they tear around here like 2 sisters, as close and tight as if they were blood.

if you can't get another, no matter what.....start spending more time with smokey, give him more love, more attention, etc than you do now to fill that void of his brother. as well as clean the area where he use to be. bleach it down and all, remove his smell from the house so smokey can't smell it and be reminded of him.

Other than another cat, which may not work out either, you are just going to have to pay more attention and play more with the cat. Also, maybe don't let him go in the basement anymore. It may be hard but if it bothers you that much it may be something to do. Otherwise just let him mourne and hopefully work it out. No one has a time on mourning, it's different for all of us and possibly cats too. Good luck to you. Prayers coming your way.

We too have a Mainecoon. She is also a tabby. But she is an only cat very attached to my mother. Maybe letting him always to go the basemant is a mistake, he's placing himself in a constant greiving state. Perhaps restrict his movements to the upper floor of your home and give him time to heal w/o the living it over and over thing and bring up the last time I saw him thing. Give him more attention. We purchased a small laser light for my mom to play with the cat. Dimming the lights and she chases the red laser dot till she is exhausted. And we are laughed out.

Make sure you give your kitty a lot of love and caress him. Since your kitty is still playful, trying and play some games with him. I once had a Bengal Tabby mix and we played all kinds of games to keep him busy and he was the only one as well. Try to get him to fetch and retrieve if he doesn't already... also when i would change my sheets on my bed my cat loved running under as soon as i was about to lay the sheet down. You are Lucky to still have your kitty. I really miss my Bugsy, and wish he was still here! : ( Good Luck!

getting another cat can be horrible though.

We tried that for my cat whose companion passed away; but Cuddles ignored and then began to loathe the new kitten and actually started to harm the new one. (She would chase the kitten in the corner and just viciously bite and bite.) (Cuddles had always been an overly sweet, gentle cat before everything.) We had to put Cuddles on special behavior medicine, and eventually we had to give up Bonkers for her own well being.

Id say, crying is natural, cats can become territorial after something tragic.

But Good luck =/

I would get another cat to keep him company. But if you can't what you can do is show him alot of love. Everytime he seems sad, talk sweet to him and pet him. Pets do mourn the loss of another pet. Showing attention will help. What would be even better is if you could get a kitten to be his pal.

you should get another cat.

kittens are easy to introduce as they are not viewed as a threat to territory.

of course, it is always so much kinder to give a home to an older cat from the humane society than the cute cuddly kittent that you know for a fact will get adopted and not euthanized.

both choices have their good points, and their bad.....

but your cat certainly does sound like he is displaying signs of lonliness doesn't he?

Is there anyone you know who has a cat (or even a small breed puppy) who can bring his/her pet over for a visit? Just a thought.

You might also consider taking him with you when you visit friends as well.
